Decimal Correspondence Files, 1910–1934

1910-1934

This series consists of the school's general correspondence files. The files include documents primarily relating to the purchase of goods and services for the school including clothing, beef, automobile supplies, pottery, bedding, and Navajo rugs. However, present are records that relate to all aspects of school and reservation administration including health care, agriculture, fishing, fur and hide controversies, and herd records. Much of the files consist of letters received and copies of letters sent. Included is correspondence with all classes of correspondents, from the Office of Indian Affairs (renamed the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1947) to business firms, agency employees and private individuals. Included are advertisements, letters, circulars, directives, memoranda, and telegrams received; copies of letters, reports, surveys, and telegrams sent; invoices, circulars, contracts, purchase orders, vouchers, and other records relating to the Hayward Indian School. Some records relating to operations of Ojibwa reservations at Lac du Flambeau and La Courte Oreilles are included.
